Foreword

Education, globally, is impacted significantly by three significant entities, namely, the open educational resources (OER), artificial intelligence (AI), and technology enhanced learning (TEL). This is further paralleled by the big leap in educational outreach over the last decade, which has witnessed the onset of MOOCs (massive open online courses), online certification and degree programs, and more recently micro degrees. Further, there exists a strong need to develop holistic skills that include technical, wellness, and social interaction skills combined with ethics among the academia and industry. With this motivation and the aim of launching IIT Tirupati into the next generational orbit of education, the Office of Competency Development and Outreach (CDO) was established in January 2025. The broad goals are to (i) re-define the peripheries of educational programs, (ii) impart skill (competence) training, (iii) support continual learning, (iv) societal (public / media) outreach, and finally, (v) set up AI-driven systems for communication and analytics.

Institutional Communication & Analytics (ICA)
06  ·  Institutional Visibility & Impact

The ICA vertical manages the Institute's official data record and its public voice. It maintains the accuracy of institutional statistics used in rankings and statutory reporting, and it carries the Institute's activities to faculty, students, and the wider public through the newsletter, digital platforms, and press. Together, these functions keep IIT Tirupati's data audit-ready and its profile current — both within the campus and beyond it.

Institutional Data & Analytics

This function collects, validates, and reports the Institute's core academic, research, placement, and financial data — the single source used across National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and other statutory submissions. The NIRF Submission (January–February 2026) consolidated inputs from every department and section into the ranking framework's prescribed formats. The Annual Report draws on the same record base and is currently under compilation (see Looking Ahead).

Institute SLM — Institutional AI on Campus

To replace manual compilation with an auditable lookup, the vertical built the Institute SLM — a fully local AI assistant for institutional documents and data, running on campus on an entirely open-source stack at zero software cost. It answers questions on ordinances, statutes, syllabi, and annual reports with citations down to chapter and page, and turns plain-English questions about publication and faculty records into read-only database queries, returning a table, a chart, and a downloadable summary with the query itself shown in full. Faculty can register publications by DOI, along with awards and invited lectures, from a mobile app; scanned pages without a text layer are read automatically. One click produces a Word report — an annual publications summary or a department research review — with every figure traceable to the underlying record.

The design keeps institutional data sovereign. All models run locally and nothing leaves the campus network; the model proposes but never writes, with every change passing human review before it reaches the database; and logins, uploads, approvals, and queries are logged.

Ahead: a larger local model for a further gain in accuracy, vision-based extraction of tables and charts from scanned reports, reasoning across documents and records together in a single question, fine-tuning on the Institute's own query history, and a phased rollout beginning with two departments.

Strategic Communication & Digital Outreach

Beyond data, the vertical runs the Institute's outward-facing communication — the Samvid Newsletter (February–May 2026), covering faculty publications, conference participation, and departmental activity; press releases and media coordination; and the Institute's social-media and digital-platform presence, promoting conferences, workshops, and outreach events as they happen.

Institutional Visibility & Engagement

Consistent data and consistent communication compound into visibility: an accurate NIRF record, a steady newsletter cadence, and an active digital presence together keep IIT Tirupati's academic community informed and its institutional profile current with prospective students, partners, and the wider public.

07  ·  CDO Network & Services

The CDO Office works in two directions. Outward, it represents IIT Tirupati in national academic programmes through faculty coordinatorships, connecting the Institute to India's digital-learning and visiting-faculty networks. Inward, it provides the administrative backbone — planning advisory, accounts, communication materials, certification, and vendor coordination — that allows faculty and programme teams to run their own initiatives without absorbing the operational overhead themselves.

National & Institutional Academic Initiatives

Three national programmes are anchored at the Institute through coordinatorships held by CDO faculty. SWAYAM Prabha telecasts curriculum-linked higher-education content over a dedicated DTH network, reaching learners without dependable internet access. SWAYAM–NPTEL delivers certified online courses across engineering, science, and the humanities, with proctored exams at centres nationwide. GIAN brings distinguished international faculty to Indian institutions for short, intensive courses, giving students and faculty access to expertise not resident on campus. These coordinatorships place IIT Tirupati within the national delivery chain for each.
